Gap Education is a social enterprise which was founded in 2013 by former headteacher, Quentin Gunderson, in response to the challenge of closing the achievement gap in the UK. The ‘Achievement Gap’ describes the difference in educational outcomes for children who are from disadvantaged backgrounds. Only 20% of the difference in pupils’ achievement is attributable to school quality, the rest depends on life outside the school gates, states research by Save the Children (Closing the Achievement Gap in England’s Secondary Schools. Save the Children, 2012).
Our theory of change values deep engagement between parents and schools. Gap Education was founded specifically to enable schools to develop effective working relationships with families that are hard to reach, to increase their resilience and aspiration, and tackle the root causes of educational inequality. We do this through facilitating effective parental engagement, intervention and signposting of further support, helping achieve better outcomes for their children. This leads to improved attendance, behaviour, attainment and wellbeing. According to the Oxford School Improvement Report, ‘Gains in pupil achievement stemming from parent engagement initiatives tend to be permanent.’
In 2014, we launched our A+ Family Advocacy school toolkit and to date with have trained and resourced over 20 schools across the UK to use the programme. The toolkit has enabled these schools to engage with hard-to-reach families of children who are identified as not doing as well in school. The schools have reported that 81% of families they have targeted to do the A+ programme have engaged with it. 100% of programmes run so far have seen improvement in Attendance, Behaviour, Well-being and Attainment.
Gap Education is based in Reading but we aim to operate in villages, towns and cities across the UK through partnership with schools, local authorities, churches and voluntary agencies. In addition to Reading we are currently working in the following areas: Bradford, Bristol, Buckinghamshire, Essex, London, North Yorkshire, Oxfordshire, Sheffield, Surrey and West Berkshire.
